In the heart of Venice Beach, where architectural experimentation meets coastal history, this residential addition offers a study in small-scale, high-density curation. The project—a master suite addition to a traditional Venice beach house—eschews the local trend of maximizing square footage in favor of a meticulous, hyper-focused design and craftsmanship exercise.
The success of the space is rooted in an intimate, three-way collaboration between the design & construction team and the homeowners: a fine art painter and a radio producer. This intersection of visual and auditory sensibilities manifests clearly in the project's material choices.
For the master bath’s tile installation, the team spent weeks isolating the exact hue of green from Heath Tile choosing from the heritage manufacturer's seven distinct green glazes. The final selection acts as a canvas for the changing California light, requiring meticulous attention to layout and alignments during installation to honor the tile's organic variations. To achieve this flawless finish, the design and build teams initiated rigorous coordination long before the tile installation began. Through precise planning during the framing phase, the wall studs and subflooring were spaced to the exact fraction of an inch to accommodate the dimensions of the Heath tile collection, while simultaneously mapping the integration of premium, hand-finished Waterworks plumbing fixtures. This foresight eliminated the need for fractional adjustments, fulfilling the owners' strict request that only full tiles be used across both the floor and walls, entirely free of raw, cut edges.
Throughout the suite, the owners requested an atmospheric nod to classic mid-century yacht design. The response is a highly integrated partition system that acts as the home's functional spine. Sourced entirely from local artisans, the finest quality cherry wood wraps the interior, framing a central partition that operates as a complex, Swiss Army-style system. Within this structure, pocket doors slide effortlessly into the woodwork to reveal or isolate spaces, while bespoke cabinetry is built directly into the walls to minimize visual clutter.
By prioritizing local, bespoke craftsmanship over mass-produced fixtures, this compact footprint achieves a good level of architectural density leveraging the power of deliberate, slow design.
